Her work involves a phase of documentation prior to creation, which enables her to produce art based on the rawness of the Latin American reality. Once this phase is complete, she moves on to a period of trying out different techniques, and her constructive process leads her to put together her work like a poem, weaving together the questions that motivated her to create: what she is talking about, how she did it, and why she uses a specific technique. At this point she generates a new meaning: a self-explanatory poetic image.

En trabajos como “Perspectivas”, “Lindes”, “Perímetros”, “Dominios”, “Baldíos”, “Tejido foliar”, “Cartas” y “Laconistas”, Johanna Calle utiliza el texto para dibujar. A partir de los trazos manuscritos, mecanografiados e impresos, crea formas alegóricas, representaciones, metáforas que sirven para denunciar la situación sociopolítica y las consecuencias de la violencia.  En Variaciones, la artista presenta una serie de trabajos que exploran diferentes maneras de abordar la escritura, especialmente, aquellas que están cayendo en desuso: la taquigrafía, la composición musical y las cartas manuscritas. La palabra es aquí elemento formal en la obra y se transforma con el uso de líneas, puntos y retículas irregulares. Johanna Calle crea abstracciones lingüísticas y estéticas que evocan en el espectador la vulnerabilidad, la fragilidad, la precariedad, la resistencia y la transgresión<ref>Fajardo-Hill, C. (2001).
