Silvia Arango nació el 28 de septiembre de 1948 en Bogotá. Culminó su formación como arquitecta en la Universidad de los Andes de donde se graduó en 1972 para partir a Europa donde hizo estudios de posgrado en Inglaterra y Francia.

Regresó a Colombia en 1977 y se dedicó a la investigación para su doctorado, con su tesis titulada “''Evolución del Espacio Público en Bogotá en el siglo XX''” con la que obtuvo honores y le abrió el camino para empezar su carrera docente en 1978, la cual sería prolífica desarrollando metodologías y programas educativos no solo en el país sino fuera de este.

Desde los primeros momentos de su carrera, Arango ha demostrado su fascinación por la investigación la cual queda al descubierto en “''Historia de la Arquitectura en Colombia''”, el primer libro de su autoría que fue publicado, el cual se considera como la investigación más completa que se ha hecho en esa materia en el país. Gracias a su análisis, conceptos historiográficos y postura crítica se convirtió en un texto de referencia sobre los valores arquitectónicos nacionales.
